The weekly summaries aren't simple word counts—they're narrative syntheses. The AI understands that you mentioning "feeling stuck" three times in a week is different from mentioning "making progress" three times. The Privacy-AI Balance: How We Do It
Here's the honest truth: powerful AI features require cloud processing. We're completely transparent about this trade-off.
When you use voice transcription or request AI insights, your entries are sent to trusted AI processing partners over encrypted HTTPS connections. These partners process them in secure, ephemeral compute environments—meaning your data isn't stored on their servers after processing. Per their policies, your entries are never used to train their models.
For encrypted backup, we use AES-256-GCM encryption—the same bank-level security used by financial institutions. Here's the technical flow: Your phone generates a unique encryption key derived from your device credentials. Before any entry leaves your phone, it's encrypted locally. The encrypted data is then sent to our SOC 2 Type II certified PostgreSQL database. Without your device-specific key, the data is cryptographically useless—even to us.
We architected Mento with a local-first approach. Your SQLite database on-device is the source of truth. The cloud is optional and serves two purposes: encrypted backup for device migration and AI processing for smart features. You can journal completely offline and sync AI features when you're ready.

Do I need internet to create entries?
Not always. Once signed in, you can create text entries offline. Voice transcription and AI analysis require internet.
What if I lose my phone?
If you enabled encrypted backup, restore on your new phone. Without backup, entries are lost (they only exist on your device).
Can you read my entries?
No. With encryption enabled, your entries are scrambled before leaving your phone. We only see encrypted gibberish.
Do AI partners train on my entries?
No. Per our AI partners' policies, data sent for processing is not used for training their models.
What if I switch phones?
Sign in on your new phone and restore from encrypted backup (if you set it up).
Is voice transcription accurate?

When do Moments appear?
